Description
The object in the image is a Netwave Marine Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) protected data capsule. This device is the maritime equivalent of an aircraft’s “black box”.Â
- It continuously records critical ship data, including navigation information, audio, and engine status, to aid in accident investigations.Â
- The capsule is designed to be fire-resistant and is often a float-free unit, allowing for retrieval in the event of a sinking.Â
- An attached acoustic beacon helps locate the capsule underwater.Â
- International regulations require VDRs on most large passenger and cargo ships to assist in accident analysis.Â
